Sunday, March 30 great works of literature come alive when read by acclaimed local orators at Readers Theatre at the Miners Foundry Cultural Center. Legendary character actor Tim O’Connor reprises his role as director for the Spring production of Readers Theatre which features the works of renowned authors Nathaniel Hawthorne, Holly Giles, Benjamin Rosenblatt, and Ernest J. Finney as read by local actors David Irons (Foothill Theatre Company, Ewing Ventures, Legacy Productions), Bruce Kelly (Bruce Kelly Jazz Quartet), Reinette Senum (former Nevada City Mayor), and Renee Sprattling.

O’Connor originally brought the medium to the Foundry and for more than a decade, this unique theatre-style reading of prose and screen plays, has moved and inspired audiences. Reader’s Theatre has been called many things including “Theatre of the Mind” and “Interpreters Theatre”. The concept gained popularity during World War II when large stage plays were too expensive to produce. Using minimal props, the actor and your imagination illustrate the story. or the audience, the Reader’s Theatre experience is one of involvement. The audience participates with its imagination to provide the sets, costumes, and props. Skilled voice actors cause the audience to experience literature as they do.

“Storytelling opens the listener’s mind,” says O’Connor. “People often come to Reader’s Theatre not knowing what to expect, then they find themselves riveted, enraptured by the stories, and moved to an “ah ha” moment. We usually see them back again.”

O’Connor is best known for his prolific work in television including his roles as Dr. Elias Heuer in Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, Jack Boland in General Hospital, and Elliot Carson in Peyton Place, and for over ten years he has hand selected the material for the Fall and Spring productions of Reader’s Theatre.

Reader’s Theatre is a fundraiser for the Miners Foundry Cultural Center.
