The title “Quilted Dreamscapes” summarizes the vision presented in this collection of paintings which aims to highlight women as active producers of culture. Taylor’s work takes the viewer away from traditional rural quilting techniques and into a world of reinterpreted social relations, gendered spaces, and identity through craft. Her goal is to highlight the vision of women as active producers of culture.
The show will be open for viewing beginning Thursday, September 5th through Monday, September 30th.
How ‘Quilted Dreamscapes’ Evolved
While experiencing the rural environments in Southern Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico, Taylor considered the analogous value systems that define American landscapes and their relationships to craft and culture. Within this body of work, a desire to record and repurpose something before it is lost is cultivated by abstracting traditional craft. By transforming the tactile quilt into a painting, the value of the art is altered by changing its original meaning and purpose.
Taylor’s work is inspired by her deep love for the Arts and Craft movement as well as the textile masters from the Bauhaus school. Within this work, Taylor wishes to explore craft and its modern meaning today.
