The Nevada City Chinese Lunar New Year Festival and Parade welcomes the Year of the Rat, on Sunday, February 9, 2020. Chinese New Year Festivals are rare in rural communities, and CATS, along with the Miners Foundry Cultural Center, are proud to present this ninth annual family-friendly celebration, honoring the early Chinese Gold Rush pioneers and railroad workers of the Sierra. There is a change in the parade route this year. The community parade begins at 12:00 noon from the Robinson Plaza on Union Street, up Commercial Street (past the Chinese Monument), left turn and down Broad Street, right turn on Bridge Street, cross Spring Street, and into the Miners Foundry, for an afternoon of entertainment, food, and fun! Free admission at the Foundry.
Our parade Grand Marshals are Erin Thiem and Dan Thiem of Outside Inn and Inn Town Campground. Parade units include Chinese ceremonial Lion Dancers and a 72’ Chinese Dragon from Eastern Ways Martial Arts of Sacramento, Grass Valley Taiko drummers, school children, and other community entries. They will spearhead an afternoon of Asian culture and entertainment at the Foundry from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Food would be available for sale by vendors at the Foundry, as well as Asian-themed arts and crafts and exhibits relevant to local and Asian-American culture and history. We are seeking parade entries, entertainers, vendors, sponsors, and volunteers. Contact Jeannie Wood at firstname.lastname@example.org.
