On Sunday, December 22nd, Sierra Cinemas/Nevada Theatre Film Series presents “GIFT” at 7pm at the Nevada Theatre.
Inspired by Lewis Hyde’s beloved classic “The Gift: Creativity and the Artist in the Modern World”, GIFT is a tribute to something that can’t be measured or counted, bought or sold. Robin McKenna’s documentary explores the social and ethical value of art. An intimate exploration of real-life gift economies, it’s a reflection on the creative process, the reasons we labor in service of our gifts, and a celebration of the imagination. RIchly cinematic and politically provocative, it follows character-driven stories: from the elaborate preparations for a Pacific Northwest potlatch to an unexpected gift of music at the Auckland Art Gallery, from an occupied factory in Rome protected by art, to the “pirate utopia” of Burning Man.
“At a time when art is relentlessly commercialized and commodified, Robin McKenna’s “Gift” provides a gentle and welcome reminder of other values.” A. O. Scott, New York Times
“McKenna’s gentle film…encourages the viewer to look beyond the monetary value of creativity.” Pat Padua, The DC Line
“GIFT” was rated 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film is being shown at 7pm (with doors opening at 6:30) and admission is $8. For more information, to view the trailer, or to purchase advance tickets, visit www.sierratheaters.com
