With roots in San Francisco Chinatown nightclubs of the 1940s to 1970s, Community Asian Theatre of the Sierra presents Grant Avenue Follies, a group of senior Asian women, who have been dancing their hearts out in their golden years for fun, camaraderie, and inspiration. Chinatown nightclubs, such as the once famed Forbidden City and the China Sky Room in San Francisco, were often frequented by Hollywood celebrities and returning soldiers from World War II during their heydays. At the height, the dancers were known for top quality entertainment, and some toured abroad to critical acclaim. The documentary, “Dancing Through Life: The Dorothy Toy Story,” gives historical perspective and will precede the cabaret show. Meet the Emmy award-winning filmmaker, Rick Quan, and the performers in a Q&A after the show. Today, Grant Avenue Follies support many causes for veterans, children and seniors, in addition to touring Las Vegas, Seattle, Chicago, Honolulu, and more! Tickets are $20 in Grass Valley at the Book Seller and Briar Patch and online at www.catsweb.org.
