Nevada City Smart Phone App

Business Owners – You Spoke, We Listened

Advertising is a critical component to business success, but it can also be the priciest. The Nevada City Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the City of Nevada City, has invested in the development of a Smart Phone App for Nevada City to help offset those advertising expenses.

Whether you are an iPhone user or not, many of our visitors are! It is estimated that there will be over 1.8 billion smart phones in use by 2013. That’s more than all the computers in the world. What’s more, those users are young, highly educated, and affluent, with 40% earning in excess of $100,000 per year. Smart Phone Apps are a great advertising tool because iPhone users constantly look to their phones for instant, up-to-date information.

Introducing The Nevada City Smart Phone App
We’d like to have every business in Nevada City represented in this app. Lucky for us, two Nevada City residents developed the City App software and have already begun to build the Nevada City App. While it is not ‘live’ yet, most of the downtown merchants are already listed in the app now. We have visited many of you to discuss the benefits and features, but just in case we missed you, here’s the scoop:

We need your participation to make a great App for Nevada City!
• Cost for Chamber members is only $25 per year. That’s only $2.08 per month!
• Cost for non-Chamber member is only $60 per year. That’s only $5 per month!
These prices are only guaranteed through 6/15/11, so sign up today!!!

Here’s what you get for your annual investment:

Each participating business will receive a full page in the App, containing:
• Business Name, Address
• Phone Number with automatic phone dialing
• Website Link
• Story (2 to 3 paragraphs), plus hours of operation
• Photo – Measuring at least 640 pixels wide (JPG format)
• Map with turn-by-turn directions
• Plus you can change your content at any time!
Additional levels of participation are available.

Features/Benefits:
• A Great Tool For Tourists & Locals
• Hotels, Dining, Shopping & Services
• Maps With Turn-By-Turn Directions
• Events, Festivals & Entertainment listings
• Beautiful Photo Galleries & Videos
• Include Walking Tours With Audio
• Push/message Notifications To All Users
• Social Media Integration
• Find Public Parking Lots & Restrooms
Additional features are being rolled out as the app develops.

Remember, these prices are only guaranteed through 6/15/11, so sign up today!!!
Simply bring your check to the Chamber office with ‘city app’ in the memo.

Questions? Call the Chamber at 265-2692 for details.

Letters Needed To Assure Downtown Courthouse Location

At a recent meeting with the AOC, they explained the necessary steps for the scope change approval process. The scope change I am referring to is the change from purchasing new property to build a courthouse upon to providing temporary housing of the courthouse while rebuilding the courthouse in its approximate existing location. Letters of support will be very beneficial to this process. If you support this change, please send your letters in now. The suggested length for these letters is one page. Letters on individual or company letterhead signed by one person will be more persuasive than petition-style letters signed by multiple persons.

Please address your letters to:
Mr. William C. Vickrey
Administrative Director of the Courts
Administrative Office of the Courts
455 Golden Gate Avenue
San Francisco, CA 94102-3688

DO NOT MAIL THE LETTERS TO MR. VICKREY.   SEND THEM TO MR. MENARD AS DIRECTED BELOW.

Please scan your completed letters and send them to him via e-mail or send them via regular mail. Both addresses are shown below. Call him if you need more information before you write your letters. It would be helpful for them to know who will be writing letters of support. Please e-mail him right away with your commitment. Please forward this e-mail on to others who may want to write a letter of support. They would like to receive the completed letters by Monday June 6th.

Rescuers caution river recreationalists: Take care

The Union had a great article today about river safety.

Rescuers are hoping to not use their training over Memorial Day weekend, one that is traditionally “notorious” for river rescues.  With water flows reaching 2,500 cubic feet per second (cfs) near the Highway 49 bridge this week, according to DreamFlows.com, rescue officials are asking the public to stay out of the Yuba over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

A Memorial Day Benefit for Hospice of the Foothills

Friends of Hospice is honored to present their annual “Butterfly Garden of Remembrance” this Memorial Day weekend.  Our benefit for Hospice of the Foothills offers the community a special place to express the loss of their loved one.

You are invited to write a special message and the names of your loved ones on a card with a donation of $15, or an amount of your choice, for each Remembrance with your personal message and we will attach each card to a beautiful butterfly stake and place it in the Garden.

Call for Entries-Wild & Scenic Film Festival

The Wild & Scenic Film Festival announces their annual Call for Entries, open now through the submission deadline of September 30, 2011. The tenth annual festival takes place January 13-15, 2012, in downtown Nevada City.

The largest festival of its kind in the United States, Wild & Scenic seeks unique environmental and adventure films that aim to inspire and educate. In 2010, the festival received over 350 entries for a final official selection of approximately 115 films. The Wild & Scenic then travels to over 115 locations in the United States and internationally. The “on tour” program gives filmmakers a wonderful opportunity for worldwide exposure of their film.

Filmmakers of all abilities and backgrounds are invited to submit their films. All films must be formally submitted through the online service, www.withoutabox.com. Details for submitting are also included on the festival’s website, www.wildandscenicfilmfestival.org.

Says Wild & Scenic Film Festival Producer, Leslie Jacobson, “SYRCL’s Wild & Scenic Film Festival showcases a wide range of environmental and adventure films. We look for films that are entertaining, educational, and above all inspirational.”

Founded in 2003, the Wild & Scenic Environmental Film Festival is a produced by the South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL). The festival brings together films, speakers, filmmakers, environmental activists, and celebrities from around the world to celebrate environmental filmmaking. The three-day weekend event held annually each winter in Nevada City, CA, features films, workshops, wine tastings, receptions, awards ceremony, and more. Past special guests include Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard, poet Gary Snyder, actors Patrick Stewart, Daryl Hannah, and Peter Coyote, and activists Julia Butterfly, Winona LaDuke, Tim DeChristopher, Randy Hayes and Colin Beavan.

Since 1983, SYRCL has been committed to the protection, preservation and restoration of the greater Yuba Watershed. The organization works to fulfill its mission by aggressively seeking environmental solutions through the tools of education, organization, collaboration, litigation and legislation. SYRCL’s Wild & Scenic Film Festival serves as a way to further expand their message and raise support for its campaigns.

Tickets, plus the official selection of films and events for the 2012 festival will be available beginning in December. For more information visit: www.wildandscenicfilmfestival.org.
