Bicycle Action in Nevada City
This 49th annual event, the oldest bike race on the West Coast and second oldest in the nation, will be held on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 21, on the streets of historic downtown NC. See many of the nation’s top teams and riders, including those who rode in the 2009 Tour of California. Racing action begins at 1 p.m. and runs until 6 or 7 p.m. It’s a fun day in NC and it’s free. Bring Dad. He’ll love it.
Fireworks in Nevada County!
Planning your Fourth of July? You’ll find one of Northern California’s best fireworks shows here in Nevada County. It’s been reported as the best aerial fireworks spectacular in the Sierra foothills. The fun opens at 11 a.m. with a traditional hometown parade through downtown Grass Valley. Then it’s off to the Nevada County Fairgrounds for a daylong community celebration, culminating in the 9:30 p.m. aerial fireworks show. Fairground gates open at 3 p.m. and music begins at 4 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults; free for ages 12 and under.
Is NC Really a Ghost Town?
You can learn all about Nevada City’s ghosts from tour guide Mark Lyon, who leads Nevada City Ghost Tours on Saturday evenings through October. The walking tours depart from 101 Boulder Street (the corner of Broad, Boulder and Nevada streets) at 7:30 p.m. The adventure is $10 for adults and $5 for young people 12 and under. Ages 5 and under are free. Call 265-6877.
Gold Rush History
A new color brochure for the fine historical museums of Nevada City and Grass Valley has been published by the Nevada County Historical Society. The brochure has maps and also includes historic sites, cemeteries and buildings. The illustrated brochure is available at local museums and Chamber of Commerce Visitor Centers.
Market Days in NC
The Nevada City Certified Growers Market is held from 3-6 p.m. each Tuesday at the Sierra Presbyterian Church, 175 Ridge Road.
The Nevada City Farmers Market runs every Saturday through October. In addition to fine fruits and vegetables it features live music, kids activities and more. At Broad and Union streets, downtown Nevada City. Hours are 8 a.m. to noon (9 a.m. to 1 p.m. after Labor Day).
