Springtime, Wildflowers & Wine

What could be better? A springtime hike amid the wildflowers of the Wild & Scenic South Yuba River followed up by an afternoon of wine tasting in historic downtown Nevada City.

A Wildflower Hike

April is peak wildflower season along Buttermilk Bend Trail, which runs up the river canyon from the historic covered bridge at Bridgeport. You’ll find a variety of wildflowers and spectacular vistas of the river.

Explore on your own or hook up with a guided tour (11 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays at the parking lot on the north side of the river). Bring good walking shoes, water and snacks. Tours are 1.5-2 hours.

Information and directions: South Yuba River State Park: Call (530) 432-2546 or see South Yuba River State Park

Winetasting in Nevada City

Follow up with a visit to historic downtown Nevada City, cultural outpost of the Sierra foothills. Here you’ll find the West’s best preserved Gold Rush town with many fine shops and restaurants.

After lunch, sample local wines at the Nevada City Winery, 321 Spring Street, (ncwinery.com) and the Indian Springs Vineyards Tasting Room, 303 Broad Street (indianspringswines.com).
