Victorian Christmas Wed. and Sun.

Nevada City is beautiful in its coat of winter snow! A large and joyous crowd turned out Sunday for Victorian Christmas, enjoying the romance of Christmas under a lightly falling snow.

Two more chances! Historic downtown Nevada City hosts Victorian Christmas on Wednesday (Dec. 17), 6-9 p.m., and again on Sunday (Dec. 21), from 1:30-6 p.m.

Explore our wonderful specialty shops, visit our fine restaurants, take the family on a horsedrawn carriage ride. Santa welcomes youngsters at his workshop on Pine Street; kids can also enjoy pony rides in the New York Hotel parking lot.

Film Festival is Jan. 9-11

Tickets are now on sale for Nevada City's first big event of 2009, the popular Wild & Scenic Environmental Film Festival, sponsored by the South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) and presented by Patagonia.

The event takes place Jan. 9-11 at locations throughout downtown Nevada City. It features 120 films from 18 countries, 40 premieres, 100 speakers, opening receptions, workshops, music, art and much more.

Tickets for the 7th annual event range from $5 to $325 and may be purchased at www.wildandscenicfilmfestival.org or by calling the SYRCL office at 530-265-5961. The festival usually sells out so early purchase is advised.

Nevada County Calendar, 2009

More than 200 local events of all kinds are included in the 2009 Nevada County Calendar of Events, which is published by the Nevada City and Grass Valley/Nevada County chambers of commerce and the Historic Bed & Breakfast Inns of Grass Valley and Nevada City.

The new calendar will be available in print and on the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce website in early January.

Stay Nevada City, Ski the Summit

This winter, enjoy Nevada City hospitality and enjoy world-class skiing and snowboarding on Donner Summit, a beautiful 45-minute ride up the hill on state Scenic Route 20.

Nevada City hoteliers, bed and breakfast innkeepers, restaurant operators and others are found on the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce website. Or call the chamber for a referral.

Local mountain favorites include Sugar Bowl, Donner Ski Ranch, Boreal and Soda Springs for downhill skiing and snowboarding; and Royal Gorge for cross country skiing. Even closer to home and free is the Steep Hollow cross country ski trail system marked by the Nordic Skiers of Nevada County. It's located off Highway 20 just beyond the Alpha-Omega Overlook, 18 miles east of Nevada City.
