The Bike Race: A 47-Year Tradition
Every Father's Day, many of the top competitive cyclists in the world arrive in Nevada City to compete in what has been called the toughest one-day criterium in the nation.

Begun in 1961, the Nevada City Bicycle Classic is the oldest race on the West Coast. Riders compete on a steep and twisting course that runs rights through the middle of town. Speeds can exceed 50 mph on the Broad Street downhill. ncclassic.com

This year, spectators will see some of the racers who competed in the Tour of California. The action runs from 1 p.m. to about 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 17.

Discover the Yuba River
Sparkling in the sun, with clear water rapids and deep blue pools, the South Yuba River is a prime summertime attraction in Nevada City. On a hot day, you'll find lots of NC locals at the river.

A wild and scenic river, the South Yuba is protected as part of the South Yuba River State Park, California's first river corridor state park.

Explore the forested trails up and down the river canyon, stake your claim to the perfect swimming hole. NC's closest trailheads are at Edwards Crossing (North Bloomfield Road) Purdon Crossing, the Highway 49 bridge and Jones Bar. more info

Summer Nights in July
Nevada City celebrates the season with a special Wednesday night event, Summer Nights in Nevada City, this year on July 11, 18 and 25. Hours are 6-9 p.m. Downtown streets are closed to motorized traffic and filled with friends, music, arts, crafts, classic cars and more.

Some of the Northern Sierra's finest musicians will perform on five outdoor stages located throughout the downtown historic district. more info

Growers Markets in NC
Visit Nevada City for local, farm fresh fruits and vegetables. The Nevada County Certified Growers Market runs every Tuesday, July through October, 3-6 p.m. at the Sierra Presbyterian Church, 175 Ridge Road. A downtown market is scheduled every Friday in August and September, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on York Street. For information on the markets, call 265-5551.

A Festive Fourth of July
Nevada City and nearby Grass Valley take turns hosting the Nevada County Fourth of July Parade. This year's parade is in Grass Valley, beginning at 11 a.m. sharp on Wednesday, July 4.

After the parade, the actions shifts to the Nevada County Fairgrounds. Gates open at 3 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults and free for children 12 and under. The Sierra foothills' premier aerial fireworks exhibition blasts off at 9:30 p.m.
