‘Aloha Duck' Arrives in Nevada City on Saturday (Sept. 9, 2006)

All the thrills and excitement of Pacific island toy duck racing come to Nevada City on Saturday, Sept. 9, as the 49er Breakfast Rotary Club of Nevada City hosts “Aloha Duck,” the 15th Annual Gold Country Duck Race.

Carrying a Hawaiian holiday theme, the duck race will be held on the rapids of Deer Creek at The Plaza in historic downtown Nevada City.  The event is the Rotary club's major annual fundraiser, benefitting many local school and youth organizations.

The fun family event features a children's carnival with games and activities, music and entertainment and food and refreshments.  Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and admission is free.

Approximately 10,000 toy ducks will race down Deer Creek in six preliminary heats beginning at 11 a.m., with the 25 top ducks from each heat qualifying for the Lucky Seven final, which is planned for about 2:30 p.m.

The race offers a $5000 first prize, $1000 second prize and $500 third prize plus many other smaller cash and merchandise prizes.  Racing ducks may be adopted for $5 from 49er Rotarians and from many of the community groups that will benefit from this year's event.  Tickets are available at the event.
