Astronaut Offers Two Public Presentations

NASA astronaut Garrett Reisman will offer two public presentations as part of his visit to Nevada County and participation in the Sept. 14 Nevada City Constitution Day Parade.

Astronaut Reisman will be the special guest at two free public programs at the Grass Valley Veterans Memorial Building, which seats up to 900 people. He is scheduled to appear Friday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m., and Saturday,Sept. 13, at 9 a.m.

Reisman, who spent three months aboard the International Space Station and completed a seven-hour spacewalk earlier this year, will speak for about 45 minutes and then hold open question and answer sessions with the audience.

The event is hosted by the Nevada City Constitution Day Commission and will be emceed by retired KNCO radio personality Jim Kerr.

"This is a rare opportunity for the community to meet an astronaut," said Commission Chairman Dennis Cassella. “It will be something that local youngsters will surely remember for the rest of their lives."

The presentations are being sponsored by the County of Nevada, cities of Nevada City and Grass Valley, American Legion, Frank Gallino Post No.130 and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

The astronaut is the son-in-law of Dave Francis, owner of Las Katarinas Mexican Restaurant in Nevada City, whose assistance made the visit possible.

Astronaut Reisman will be a grand marshal of the 42nd Annual Nevada City Constitution Day Parade in historic downtown Nevada City beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept.14.
