'Farewell to Bush' the theme of this year's Famous
Marching Presidents parade on Constitution Day
For 21 years, some 80 participants have portrayed United States presidents and their wives as the Famous Marching Presidents of Nevada City at the Constitution Day celebration in Nevada City, which this year will be held Sept. 14. This year's theme for the Marching Presidents is: "Get Ready to Pass the Bush Buck."
The Famous Marching Presidents, founded by David "Sparky" Parker in 1988, has had a colorful history of costumes, pageantry and revelry. Many of the marchers have been involved since the beginning, according to Parker, who will again line up as Martin Van Buren. He will also bestow the Lambert Award, named for the parade's founder -- Col. William "Bill" Lambert in 1967 -- to a person who has made a significant contribution to the area. Last year, the presidents gave Parker the prize. A few years back it was the late local folk legend U. Utah Phillips.
The group portrays all 43 presidents from George Washington to George W., as well as their first ladies, Secret Service agents, and the occasional girlfriend. Participants will begin marching at 2 p.m. down Broad Street. A private party will cap the festivities.
