Chinese New Year Festival February 17th

The Chinese New year is upon us! According to the Chinese Zodiac, the Year of 2013 is the Year of the Snake, which begins on February 10, 2013 and ends on January 30, 2014. The Snake is the sixth sign of the Chinese Zodiac, which consists of 12 Animal Signs. This is a year of water Snake, a year of possibility and prosperity. Welcome in the Year of the Snake with the 2013 Chinese New Year Festival at the Stonehouse in Nevada City – happening Sunday, February 17th, from 12:00 – 3:00 pm.

A family-friendly affair, join CATS, the Xiao Mao (Little CATS) Culture Club, Nikko Wu, Kwong Chew and various community groups in a magical afternoon of dragon dances, martial arts, entertainment, tea tasting, workshops, artwork, an Auction and more! Admission is free; traditional food, beverages and plenty of entertainment will be available, including raffle prizes!

We’ll kick off the festivities with traditional Chinese lion-dancing at the Robinson Plaza, located at the base of Commercial and Broad Streets in Nevada City, at 12:00 pm sharp. Watch the lions “ward off evil spirits,” in preparation for the New Year; a delightful performance and a timeless practice, intent on imparting “blessings” and protection to all. Learn about the history of lion dancing and learn a few lion “moves” yourself!

Follow the lion parade down the street to the Stonehouse, where festivities will continue from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Asia Restaurant (Kwong Chew) will provide tradition fare; enjoy a traditional Chinese dance by Lily Zhu, martial arts by Body Balance, Chinese Tea Ceremony by Lily Zhu, a mahjong workshop, an educational Chinese culture and history exhibit, an Art for the Heart Exhibit and Auction by Anthony Emmolo. The Xiao Mao Culture Club is providing educational arts and crafts for the children, including face-painting and a Chinese calligraphy lesson! The Stonehouse is located at 107 Sacramento Street, in downtown Nevada City.
