Mission

Our mission is to provide a fun event for the entire community that is family friendly and enjoyable for all ages. Our primary goal is to have fun! Our secondary goal is to raise money to benefit improvements at Pioneer Park. The objective will be for these improvements to be immediately attainable (within 12 months), so that the community and participants can see and enjoy the benefits of their participation in this year’s event…prior to next year’s event.

What is the Park Project?

Pioneer Park is a beautiful park. Children and adults alike enjoy the recreation opportunities it offers. Our goal is to raise money to help fund additional amenities within the park. Current ideas include Bocce Ball courts, a sand volleyball court, additional seating areas around the pool, and a multi-use (bicycling/jogging/walking) pathway within the park boundaries. Additional ideas are welcome!

Why a soapbox derby?

Our community is filled with hills, and amazingly talented individuals. A soapbox derby is a fun event that is GREEN! It is a GRAVITY POWERED event, fueled only by the creativity and imagination of the participants!

Why this date?

Saturday, June 16th, 2012 is the day before the 52nd Annual Nevada City Classic bike race. This race is the second oldest of it’s kind in the nation. (Previous winners include Greg Lemond, Lance Armstrong, Levi Leipheimer and other top name riders.) We feel that both events will complement each other, and draw a similar cross section of our community. By holding the soapbox derby at the park, it will not impact the streets of downtown for a second day. By holding the event on Saturday, it will create an entire weekend of fun and excitement!
