At the Nevada City Gas station, they pump your gas and check your oil for free, just like the good old days. Nevada City Gas is right near downtown, at the “Y” between Zion and Pine Streets, just up from Highway 49. The sales are cash only, but the prices are competitive. “I just like to buy local whenever I can” said a recent customer. “It’s just a friendlier experience.” The Nevada City Gas Station is open between 7:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. every day, and can be reached at (530) 265-3924.

MOMS Raising Money for Nevada City Schools

The Moms on the Mountains fundraiser for Nevada City Schools will take place Saturday, September 25th, 2010 at the Sugar Bowl Ski Resort. This is the primary fundraiser of the Nevada City Schools Foundation, which provides immediate funding for technology and the arts, as well as student program support.

Any female 18 years or older can participate. There will be three well-marked hiking options. The easiest will be a 2-mile loop within the Sugar Bowl resort area. The intermediate and the long hikes are both loops that have beautiful views including Donner peak. Attendees also have the option of not hiking at all – just enjoy the lodge: good food, massages, raffle prizes, a silent auction, the bar, and more. The Moms store will also be stocked with lots of fun gear to wear hiking, or just around town.

NC Farmer’s Market Saturdays thru Oct.

The Nevada City Farmer’s Market will run Saturday mornings starting at 8:30 from June 19 to October 30, 2010. The market features many interesting vendors and artists in addition to locally grown fruits and vegetables. Live musical entertainment is also provided.

Thank you to all the businesses and individuals who contributed to the flower baskets that beautify our historic downtown area! The Flower Basket program is overseen by the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce, and the cost of these is covered by various companies and individuals who want to help beautify the town. The baskets are generally filled with colorful annuals and are cared for either by the business that they are near, or by individuals. The baskets need to be tended and watered regularly, but the hard work pays off as they add a lot of beauty to Broad Street and the surrounding area. Thanks again to everyone who contributes so much to this effort!

The Nevada City Farmer’s Market starts this Saturday, June 19th, at 8:30 a.m. in downtown Nevada City.

The 50th Nevada City Bicycle Classic is Coming!

Nevada City is getting ready for the 50th annual Nevada City Bicycle Classic race – to be held on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 20th starting at 1:00 p.m.

A premier cycling event that was won by Lance Armstrong last year, the classic is also a Lance Armstrong Junior Olympic Race Series (LAJORS) event and will attract top national riders, both pro and junior.

Races will start at 1:00 p.m. with the junior race. The Men’s Pro race is expected to start at 5 p.m. and go for about an hour and half.

Fun Family Bike Event before Amgen

The Bike Blast, a fun family event, will take place Saturday, May 15th at Seven Hills School. This fundraiser for Nevada City Schools Foundation will feature road rides, a mountain bike trials course, a bike rodeo, carnival, a silent auction, and more.

Advanced registration is advised, (to assure lower fee, a T-shirt, etc.) however, folks may register the day of. Registration fees run from $10 for kids – $45 adults and include lunch and bike activities and carnival entertainment. All proceeds go to Nevada City Schools student programs. More information.

Volunteers Needed for Preservation Conference

The California Preservation Foundation is holding their 35th annual California Preservation Conference in Nevada City and Grass Valley from May 12-15th. Volunteer to assist with the conference, and you can hear expert presentations for free.

The Conference is entitled: “The Sierra Nevada: Preserving A Sense of Place”. Some of the presentations include: “Thar’s Gold in Them Thar Hills”: Uncovering Nuggets for Melding Economic Development and Preservation, Past is Prologue: Preservation as a Sustainable Solution, Heritage Tourism: Refresh and Improve your Community’s “Brand” for Heritage Tourism Promotion, and more.

Volunteers are needed to help with many conference tasks including registration, monitoring, providing information, handling paperwork, and more. Volunteers may attend the Conference Educational Sessions and Plenary Session for free, based on the number of hours volunteered. In addition, volunteers will be invited to a Thank-You Event which will take place after the Conference.

Members of the public who are not California Preservation Foundation members may also get tickets to attend the numerous educational sessions and workshops presented by experts.

The Conference will also feature continuing education credits for qualifying specialties, exclusive tours that highlight Nevada County’s rich history, architecture, and natural beauty, and special events in Nevada County’s most historical locations.

Google high speed Internet March a Success

Nevada City’s 95959google event on March 14th was a huge success. Over 200 locals participated in an effort to convince Google that Nevada City would be the best candidate for its Fiber for Communities project. If selected, the test city will receive super high speed Internet access in exchange for helping Google test its technology.

Nevada County experiences a higher than average out-of-county migration after high school graduation or attendance at Sierra College. Students who leave the county to attend 4-year institutions typically stay in those areas or other more densely populated regions as they begin their careers and their own businesses.

The Nevada County Economic Resource Council and the Nevada County New Business Network (NCNBN) recognize that the Gold Country’s true gold is its youth.

NCNBN seeks to attract and retain young professionals and entrepreneurs between the ages of 20-40, especially former Nevada Union, Bear River, and Truckee High School graduates, who have or are interested in starting a business.

NCNBN is building a comprehensive on-line resource directory of recent and former local graduates, which includes contact information, technical education, and biographical information, with the aim of reaching out to Nevada County graduates who have or are interested in returning to Nevada County to start or build their business and professional careers.

In 2010, NCNBN will then begin work on a modified incubator with the purpose of providing a support system for these new businesses that includes mentoring, financial support and an infrastructure that helps ensure their success.

NCNBN is a non-fee, non-membership based group.
