Sierra Friends of Tibet welcomes the 12th Annual Visit of Tibetan Buddhist Monks to Nevada County for a sand painting in historic Saint Joseph’s Hall

January 15 – 21, 2012

Unless otherwise noted, all events take place at:
St. Joseph’s Cultural Center
410 S. Church Street
Grass Valley, CA 95945
530-272-4725

For a Complete Schedule go to www.sierrafriendsoftibet.org

Sierra Friends of Tibet in collaboration with Tibetech.org is pleased to announce the 12th Annual Visit of Tibetan Buddhist Monks from Gaden Shartse Monastery exiled in south India. This year the tour includes a highly accomplished spiritual master from Tibet, Venerable Geshe Phuntsok Gyaltsen. Geshe Gyaltsen was born in Dekhung, Tibet in 1937. At age 11 he was ordained as a monk in Tibet’s oldest Gelugpa monastery, Gaden Shartse. In 1959, Geshela escaped to India following China’s invasion of Tibet. Continuing his studies in the re-established Gaden Shartse Monastery in exile in India, Geshe Gyaltsen received a Geshe Lharampa degree, the highest degree awarded by the monastery with highest honors in 1985.

The tour’s purpose is to raise funds for the Gaden Shartse School which has 400 students aged 5 to 19 years. The students study Tibetan, English and Hindi languages as well as mathematics. The goal is to raise funds to purchase computers for the school.

In addition to offering teachings on compassion and nonviolence, over the week the monks will create a sand painting of the Embodiment of Compassion (Chenrezig in Tibetan). Viewing of the painting in St. Joseph’s Hall will be held daily from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm through January 21. Chenrezig is the personification of great compassion of all enlightened beings. Tibetans believe Chenrezig took the special oath to listen to the cries of poor and destitute and to fulfill the oath, appears into every necessary and suitable form to save beings from suffering. It is believed by the Tibetan people that when viewing the sand painting with pure motivation to benefit others and strong devotion, one may purify layers of negative karma. The sand painting is highly detailed and painfully constructed in an elaborate design with intricate symbols. At the end of the week the beautiful sand painting will be swept up in a ceremony which reminds viewers of the impermanent nature of physical reality. Sand will then be distributed to those attending the ceremony.

Schedule may be subject to change slightly. Please check the website often for updates. To schedule personal healing appointments, Land and House Blessings by the monks, please call Joseph: 530-272-4725

Nevada County Arts is delighted to be a sponsor of SYRCL’s Wild & Scenic® Film Festival. An extraordinary arts asset in our community, the festival is considered to be the largest film festival of its kind with films that combine stellar filmmaking, beautiful cinematography and first-rate storytelling. This will be the first year of this collaboration as well as the largest coordinated art show of its kind in Nevada County.

Nevada County Arts has selected more than 56 artists whose work will be displayed in several venues throughout downtown Nevada City, at The Center for the Arts in Grass Valley and at BriarPatch during the 10th Annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival®, January 13-15, 2012. Twenty artists’ work will be on display in the ‘Jury Selection Exhibit’ at the Alpha Building (the festival headquarters).

The featured art to be displayed during the festival includes many mediums (sculpture, woodcuts, charcoal etchings, silkscreen prints, cartoons, painting, basket weaving, cartoons and photography) and acts as another means to draw attention to environmental issues and inspire activism.

The selected art includes: An installation focused on watershed restoration by ecological artists Helen and Newton Harrison; Beach Plastic, a demonstration of the ubiquity of plastic waste in our oceans created by Judith Selby Lang and Richard Lang who configured their collection of plastic detritus from various beaches into artworks; The Last Apothecary, a large-scale installation by Jillian Van Ness, that consists of an antique canvas wardrobe, antique glass bottles, wire, sand, and paper, which embody the Van Ness’s deep love and appreciation for the various forms and uses of water; Solomon Bassoff’s painted cement and mosaic embellished sea turtles and flowers; Jason Houston’s series of 14 portraits of individuals living in the areas around a critical wildlife reserve in Indonesian Borneo, titled People of the Forest; Geolyn Carvin’s delightful cartoon series, with the main character, Boots McFarland, who is an adventurous hiker finding humor in nature; Peggy Wrights’ sculptures constructed with natural and found objects; Joseph Daniel Fiedler’s whimsical images of birds, fish and animals; Richard Downs’ monoprints, “BP Pelican,” named for the BP deepwater horizon oil spill; as well as the Nevada County Plein Air Painters, several photographers and artists whose work focuses on the Yuba River and environs, baskets created by the Nisenan Indian people from the Nevada City Rancheria, and much more.

In the spirit of Christmas giving, three local Bed and Breakfasts have elected to “Show Off” for the holidays. Decorated in their Christmas grandeur, these inns will open their doors and welcome visitors to step back in time and enjoy the splendor of an old fashioned holiday season.

On December 15th the Elam Biggs Bed and Breakfast and the Swan Levine House in Grass Valley will welcome all visitors from 4:30 to 7:00 PM, and in Nevada City, the Deer Creek Inn will do the same… and best of all…, IT IS FREE. Not only will you get to see the heart of these magnificent Inns, but of course, we never let anyone leave hungry. So, be sure to indulge in the holiday treats offered up and well… just consider it another Christmas gift from the Innkeepers.

In these hard economic times we must share with one another the small gifts that each of us has to offer. We will share the beauty of our inns with you and you can share those wonderful smiles that make this season, as they say… “A Joy to Remember”. Happy Holidays and we will see you on December 15th.
