Local Golf Courses

Golfers enjoy two public courses and three semiprivate golf courses in the general Grass Valley-Nevada City area. Local courses are open year-around.

Dozens of other choices, offering a wide range of golfing options, are located within an easy hour’s drive. Local golfers enjoy high altitude golf in the mountains to the east during the summer and wide choices all year around in the valley to the west.

Alta Sierra Country Club

Opened in 1964, Alta Sierra is a classic foothill golf course with uphill and downhill terrain that makes it seem to play longer than it is. Full practice facility w/range, banquet facilities
Public hours: After 1 or 2 p.m. Limited public play. $59-76 incl. cart and range balls
Location: In Alta Sierra off Highway 49 seven miles south of Grass Valley.

DarkHorse Golf Club

Opened in 2003, DarkHorse has been rated a top public course by both Golf Magazine and Golf Digest. The course is described as challenging but fair. Full practice facility, driving range, golf academy. Open daily. $59-$79, incl. cart. Reduced afternoon, junior, senior rates.
Location: Four miles off Hwy. 49 via Combie Road at Lake of the Pines.

Lake of The Pines Golf Club

The Lake of the Pines Golf Club, opened in 1969, is now open to the public after many years as a private course. It’s a rolling foothill golf course with a lot of variety. Driving range, putting green, chipping facility.
Open daily, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. $33-$44. Cart: $15-$20. Junior/Twilight rates
Location: In Lake of the Pines off Combie Road. From the gate, follow golf course signs.

Nevada County Country Club

Dating to 1926, this is one of Northern California’s oldest golf courses. A challenging 9-hole layout with a 400-yard, par-4 8th hole once described as among the toughest in the north state.

Quail Valley Golf Course

Opened in 1992 and hailed by pasturegolf.com., Quail Valley is a relaxed golf course catering to locals, beginners and families. Full practice facility.
$8/$15 for 9/18 holes. $18/$30 with cart.
